I was visiting my sister yesterday, and she had a friend over who is a devout Catholic. We got on the subject of the election and she mentioned that she couldn't vote for Kerry because he's a "baby-killer".
I mentioned that Kerry has voted to support a woman's right to choose for herself, but he personally is opposed to abortion. She didn't know that he was opposed to abortion, but she said she didn't like the fact he voted for it. I gave my usual spiel about women having autonomy over their own bodies, that it's a situation better left to a decision between a woman and her doctor, etc.
I took a few deep breaths and asked her this: We have a Republican president, a Republican Congress, and a conservative Supreme Court. If they really wanted to end all abortion, shouldn't they have taken some action on it? The Republican party would rather use abortion as a political football since it is an issue that gets people working for them. They will never ban abortion as long as pro-life people will vote on this single issue.
She said she never thought of that before, and she agreed with me that it was morally worse to be opposed to abortion but not do anything more than lip service to ending abortion because it benefits you politically than it is to support a woman's right to choose and then work to keep that choice legal. She agreed with me that it was very cynical, and she said she felt a bit used.
I don't know if she will vote for Kerry now, but I feel like I planted a seed of doubt about Bush's so-called culture of life.
